There are two net effects of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks: the flooding of bandwidth and server resource attacks. While bandwidth (ICMP) flooding is best defended against upstream (at the Internet Service Provider) via Quality-of-Service (QoS) protocol setting, IP-based attacks are more difficult to identify and defend against. The Melior iSecure system handles both.
Defense against application-level attacks requires identifying the desireable traffic from the DDoS traffic geared against specific services (such as web-, e-mail, e-commerce servers), and is a valid defense both upstream as well as on a lower-bandwidth, last-mile connection.
Within seconds of a DDoS attack, the targeted systems become unavailable to all traffic, and often crash completely. These systems remain off-line for the duration of the attack, which can last hours, days, or longer (until the attacker decides to cease the DDoS attack). Until now, there has been no viable defense capable of detecting and, more importantly, defending against a DDoS attack, while still allowing legitimate traffic to pass. iSecure does not require any configuration, and automatically stops DDoS attacks.
